Indian Institute of World Culture witnessed one of the finest lectures in the recent times. The lecture Angika of Natyashastra was followed by the demonstration of the same in physical form by renowned classical dancer Nirupama Rajendra.
Nirupama with decades of expertise in Indian classical dance also made the audience get the glimpse of her vast knowledge of Natyashastra, it’s interpretations and the revival in twelfth and twenty first centuries.
The lecture was focused on ‘Angika' branch of Natyashastra which was then followed by physical rendering of the movements, Sequences and emotions.

Following are the key excerpts of the Lecture / Demonstration:
- There are four limbs of Abhinaya(Acting) i.e Angika, Vachika, Aaharya and Satvika.
- Angika is derived from Sanskrit root ‘Anga’ and means ‘that which is physical’.
- Chapters 8 to 14 of Natyashastra describe the importance of Angika Abhinaya Human body is divided into Angas and Upangas. Six major Angas are head, chest, sides, waist, legs and palm.
- Demonstration included detailed portrayal of thirteen types of head movements, five chest variations, five types of feet movements and 10 types of arm movements.
- The speaker Nirupama explained the significance of Karanas i.e series of body movements to create a meaning. She told Karanas are like sentences in english language.
- Indian art, specifically classical dance have the capacity to satisfy the individual at many levels like physical, intellectual and spiritual levels.
- Towards the end of demonstration 30 Nritta hastas were displayed followed by animal movements from the theories of Natyashastra. One such movement was Gajakreeditam which received a great round of applause of its portrayal.
